Just a generation later, my parents\u2019 peregrinations had encompassed most of Western Europe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As of writing, I\u2019ve visited about 50 countries (I counted them up once, but have forgotten the total), most of them during two spells of backpacking \u2013 first across the US, then around the world \u2013 plus others as and when the opportunity arose.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>My wife has been to twice that number of destinations, and I\u2019d wager that a significant proportion of the people who comprise Lonely Planet\u2019s extended community \u2013 staff and contributors, followers and fans \u2013 have led equally footloose lives.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The trend continues, too: my son, four, and daughter, one, have already visited many more places than my grandparents did in their entire lives. Just as I have explored the far side of this planet, might they explore the far side of another world?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It\u2019s not as far-fetched as it sounds.
